Department Chair H. Dele Davies, MD, MSc, MHCD

Dele Davies, MDH. Dele Davies, MD, MSc, MHCD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development in the College of Human Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in Canada and then trained at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in the specialty of Pediatrics. He subsequently subspecialized in Infectious Diseases of Children and obtained a Master's Degree in Epidemiology, all at the University of Toronto. Prior to being hired at Michigan State University, Dr. Davies was on the faculty at the University of Toronto and the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Dr. Davies is internationally renowned for his research in perinatal infections, particularly involving Group B streptococcus. He has over 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals in addition to book chapters and proceedings of presentations at meetings. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his research, teaching, and other contributions during his career. Twice he was awarded the Mo-Watanabe Distinguished Faculty Award for all around excellence at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Davies has held numerous grant awards from agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the International Meningitis Foundation, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health. In addition to the multiple traditional administrative duties of Department Chair here at MSU, Dr. Davies continues to hold active research grants, does clinical work, and serves on national committees.

In addition, he has fostered the development of University and Community wide interdisciplinary collaborative networks including Obesity and is the founding co-chair of the MSU Children's Health Initiative. This is an MSU initiative whose mission is to “inspire and enable the community to participate in philanthropic efforts that support excellence in research, education and clinical care benefiting children of Mid-Michigan.”

The Associate Chairs

There are two Associate Chairs in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development: the Associate Chair for Academic/Education and Clinical Affairs, and the Associate Chair for Research. The Department Chair appoints both associate chairs.

Associate Chair for Academic/Education and Clinical Affairs

Renuka Gera, MDThe Associate Chair for Academic/Education and Clinical Affairs is responsible to the Department Chair for overseeing departmental activities in undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and clinical programs.

Associate Chair for Research


Ira Gewolb, MDThe Associate Chair for Research is responsible to the Department Chair for coordinating departmental research activities.
