Jena Kruger and Chioma Okeafor receive Heavenrich scholarships

We are pleased to announce that Jena Kruger and Chioma Okeafor have been selected as recipients of a scholarship sponsored by the Robert M. Heavenrich, MD, Endowed Fund in Pediatrics. This endowed fund was established in 1992 in honor of Dr. Robert M. Heavenrich of Saginaw. The scholarship is presented annually to a student who is interested in pursuing pediatrics; with a preference given to students who are training in the Saginaw community. The student must have shown through involvement, an interest in advocating for children’s issues, demonstration of enthusiasm in the caring and compassion of patients and must demonstrate academic excellence.

Some comments on Jena’s evaluations during her clinical rotations demonstrate the very high regard she was held in by her preceptors and include: “Her basic science knowledge is outstanding; Her histories and physicals were excellent as were her chart notes. She did a good job at incorporating medical knowledge to the clinical setting in order to come up with good assessments and plans. She is a bright student who is a very quick learner, and is mature and responsible and hard working. "

As a testament to her excellence, Jena was nominated for the 2009 Burke Award for Pediatrics at the Grand Rapids campus. Jena has also been quite engaged in research.
